I am an enthusiastic visionary futurist working at the intersection of biomimicry, nature-based solutions, biomaterials and education. My passion lies in co-creating regenerative solutions for people and our ecosytems.
My academic bachground is grounded in chemical engineering and life sciences, with further specilization with a Masters in biobased sciences (Wageningen University), with a strong focus and on enviromental technology for healthy drinking water.
Outside university, my work experience ranges from working in E-waste recycling (2018), the first Living Building design in Johannesburg South Africa (2019), and a Living Machine (ecological wastewater treatment system) for the African Leadership Academy (2019). In 2022 my team won the Biobased Student Innovation Challenge (NL) and was placed 3rd in the EU finals with our 3D printed mycelium orthotic insole prototype.
At Learn Biomimicry, I’m dedicated to mentoring working professionalsthrough the Biomimicry Practitioner Programme. Here I guide professionasl to creatively integrate biomimicry design principles into innovative solutions for the challenges they face in their field and local bioregions. I have experience mentoring 100+ professionals including artists, founders, consultants, designers and engineers.
At BiomimicryNL, I am the Project Manager for the BEST Project, focusing on the integration of biomimicry into school curricula.
If you are a teacher that would like to include biomimicry in your class, contact me at yuma@biomimicrynl.org.
